The journeys in short
Sahara Amassakoul
The Sahara is the largest desert at some 9,400,000 square kilometers (3,630,000 square miles) and covers the vast majority of North Africa. Endless yellow sand plains as far as the eye can see under a scorching sun. Yet this grand natural landscape appeals to the imagination, there is beauty in sharply defined dunes and the patterns of the wind etched in the sand. Long dark shadows express the loneliness and strength that lurk in this area. The desert with its emptiness and silence cannot help but inspire admiration and humility and that is the appeal of the Sahara.
Mhamid
M’hamid is the gate to the desert. Our trips will depart from a small bivouac from here. As a traveler you will experience that from Marrakech the journey here is a prologue to the desert adventure. Through cities like Ouarzazate and Zagora you continue the journey through the Draâ valley, which takes its name from the river Draâ. This originates in the High Atlas and is the longest river in Morocco at 1100 kilometers. The landscape slowly changes from a fairytale oasis of green date palms and fertility to the drying up of the river and arid dirt roads. This is M’hamid, the starting point of your adventure.
Atlas Amassakoul
The Atlas Mountains are located in the northwest of Africa. It lies to the south of the western Mediterranean and runs from west to east through Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The mountain range is a result of the colliding of continents, the African plate hit the Eurasian plate.
The highest peaks reach above 4000 meters (Toubkal) and on some of these peaks there is also eternal snow. The area can be divided into several mountain ranges. The largest and most important are roughly from west to east:
Anti-Atlas (Morocco) High Atlas (Morocco) Small Atlas (Algeria and Morocco) Middle Atlas (Morocco) Sahara Atlas (Morocco) Nemenchage Mountains (Tunisia)
The population in the mountain range consists largely of Berbers. The term “mountain” in some Berber languages is “Adrar” and also “Adras” which is very similar to the name “Atlas”.
The diversity of geology, climate and cultural differences makes this mountain range a fascinating discovery.
